III World Congress of Russian Press in May 2001 was hosted by the country with the world's second-largest Russian-speaking population - Ukraine.
In the early 2000s in Ukraine hundreds of newspapers, magazines and electronic media were published in Russian continuing the tradition of the Ukrainian Russian journalism.
The World Congress of Russian Press in Ukraine attracted special attention of different social and political forces of the country. Several nationalist groups tried to picket and disrupt its work. However, this was not supported by the Russian press in Ukraine. Congress identified a number of programs for the development of a unified Russian information space and the expansion of information exchange.
The Congress was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko on behalf of the President of Russia. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma greeted the participants of the forum and spoke to them.
